Fifteen apprentices, 9 of whom are new, including 2 integration pre-apprenticeships, have started the new school year at Birdhouse, our integration restaurant located in Vernier.
The newcomers have all completed a 3-week internship at Birdhouse to confirm their desire to pursue a career in either cooking or service and commit to a 2 to 3-year journey to obtain their diploma (AFP or CFC). This period also serves as an opportunity for the team to assess the young individuals’ dedication and motivation while imparting crucial advice on hygiene and appropriate behaviour in a professional environment.
Birdhouse takes in young individuals facing educational challenges and multiple setbacks that make regular schooling difficult. At Birdhouse, they receive customized socio-educational support throughout their training, enabling them to complete their education and earn their diploma. These personal challenges are at the core of the work carried out by our training and integration coach, who supports and assists them throughout their apprenticeship. Birdhouse's socio-educational approach is geared towards fostering independence and autonomy, always tailored to each individual's circumstances.
During the school year, all apprentices will have the opportunity to undertake an external internship lasting from 2 weeks to 1 month. This experience will help them develop their interpersonal skills as well as enhance their practical knowledge of the profession (working hours, dealing with customers, types of catering).
Environmental sustainability is an integral part of the training at Birdhouse and apprentices are encouraged to recognize its significance. We have implemented a zero-plastic initiative within the restaurant, with beverages available from a beverage dispenser or in recyclable glass or PET bottles. Since most of our offerings are made on-site, there are almost no non-glass containers (such as homemade yoghurts and desserts).
We primarily source our raw materials locally, whenever possible, prioritizing products labelled GRTA (Genève-Région Terre-Avenir). Organic waste is collected and pre-composted in-house before being picked up by a composting company.
Come and meet our apprentices during lunch hours (Monday to Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.).
Our spaces are also available for private bookings in the evenings and on weekends.
We look forward to welcoming you!
